This Maiden Final has been decimated by scratchings to the point where it looks a two dog race on paper. While Mepunga Surprise hasn’t shown a huge amount of speed from the boxes she looks very strong and that should be the difference. She was average away here on Sunday but found clear air into the first turn and that was the end of the section. She ran the best of the day. Her previous start was in the same type of race where she got well back and made ground late to be easily beaten by her kennel mate Departed. That has turned out to be a hot form race with multiple winners coming out of it. While Aeroplane Ricky showed great speed to lead and win last Sunday at its first race start i am banking on the experience of Mepunga Surprise to be the difference tonight.

First time this dog has had a decent draw in his last six starts. Crawled out of the boxes last week and ended up well back and was never a factor. Previous start he didn’t show a lot of early speed either and was never in the race. While he has had two goes at the 595m and is yet to place , this is the first time he has drawn close to the fence and it should see him get a much better run in transit and be the difference. While the odds are no great spoil considering his lack of box speed at times this doesn’t look a strong field on paper.
