Lachie’s AFL Round 20 Preview: Adelaide Crows v Port Adelaide Power | Betting Preview

29 July, 2023

Showdown is here! There won’t have been too many before this with so much on the line. The Crows simply must pull off the upset to keep any slim hopes of finals alive, if motivation to beat their biggest and most hated rivals wasn’t enough! The Power have been incredibly impressive this season and sit in 2nd place, but after losing last week, and a trip down to Geelong next week, plus the Lions and Demons hunting down their place on the ladder for a home final 1st week of Finals, they’ll be looking at this game as well as a must-win game. The Crows took the chocolates earlier in the year in the early match this season. I expect them to pull off the upset and make it 2/2 against their loud and noisy neighbours, and keep their season alive. Read below to see why and my betting selection for the game!

Adelaide Crows vs. Port Adelaide: Showdown  Preview

One of the biggest ‘Showdowns’ in years is set to ignite the Adelaide Oval this Saturday at 7:40 pm as the Adelaide Crows take on the Port Adelaide Power in a highly anticipated AFL clash. Both teams have a rich history of rivalry, and this encounter promises to be a thrilling battle for bragging rights in South Australia.

The Crows currently find themselves in the 13th position on the ladder with an 8-10 record, having won just one of their last five games. While they suffered some disappointing losses against GWS at home and Essendon away at Marvel Stadium, they showcased their resilience in narrow defeats against the Demons and Pies, both at the MCG and both under a goal. The Crows’ ability to stay competitive against top sides demonstrates their potential to upset the impressive Port Adelaide.

On the other hand, Port Adelaide occupies a strong 2nd place on the ladder with an impressive 14-4 record. Over their last five games, they have won three matches, but their two losses were against the Carlton Blues (where they rested key players and played away) and the Collingwood Magpies in a closely contested match. Despite these losses, Port Adelaide has shown great form and remains a force to be reckoned with.

Assessing the current form of both teams makes it challenging to determine which side holds the edge. Port Adelaide naturally enters the match as favorites due to their higher ladder position, but the Crows have proven that they can match and defeat the best when they are in the zone.

It is essential to note that the Crows have a significant victory over Port Adelaide earlier in the year, providing them with a psychological boost heading into this showdown. However, when it comes to these local derbies, emotions often override form and statistics, making it a daunting task to predict the outcome accurately.

In terms of player availability, the Crows will be without their gun and dynamic small forward duo in Rankine and Rachelle. Nevertheless, they will see the return of influential players like Laird and Michalanney, which can bolster their chances. On the other side, Port Adelaide will be missing their best small forward, Rioli, and will have to manage the workload of veterans Boak and Lycett.

With all these factors in mind, this clash has all the ingredients to become another classic showdown. The Power may boast a better overall record, but playing at a designated Crows “home” game and considering their past performances against top sides, including Port, the Crows have a genuine chance to pull off an upset or keep the game close.

In conclusion, the Adelaide Crows vs. Port Adelaide Power showdown promises to be a thrilling spectacle. While Port Adelaide is the favorite, the Crows have shown they can rise to the occasion, making it difficult to predict the winner with certainty. This rivalry is characterized by intense emotions, and form often becomes secondary in such high-stakes encounters. I believe the Crows will win or keep it tight, and will be taking the +9.5 handicap for Adelaide.
